Bags and luggage in Japan cover handbags, backpacks, business bags, duffle bags, clutches, wallets and suitcases used for travel, work and everyday life. Products range from soft and hard suitcases to wheeled and non-wheeled luggage, sold in luxury, premium and mass price categories through dealers, retail stores and online channels across the country.

A recent study by Markntel Advisor highlights that the Japan bags and luggage report was valued at USD 9.3 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 9.7 billion in 2026 to USD 12.31 billion by 2032, registering a CAGR of 4.05% during the forecast period. The Kanto region represented 54% in 2026, while travel applications held 33%.

Record Visitor Arrivals Drive Demand for Travel Products Across Japan

Inbound tourism is the main driver of demand in Japan, as record visitor numbers translate directly into purchases of suitcases, backpacks and travel accessories. Official figures show inbound foreign visitor arrivals reached 42 million in 2025, surpassing prior annual records and reflecting a sustained rebound from pandemic lows, while total tourism consumption reached USD 60 billion in the same year.

Visitors travel for leisure, business and transit, often over longer distances, which widens the need for functional and varied luggage suited to different trip lengths. Gateway cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto concentrate retail for bags and luggage, so higher arrivals feed sales across luxury and mainstream lines, while a relatively weak yen has increased visitors purchasing power.

Kanto Leads Japan as Luggage Takes the Largest Product Share Today

The Kanto region holds the leading share of 54% in 2026, reflecting the concentration of population, retail activity and travel gateways around Tokyo. Luggage represents a significant share of about 55% of demand in 2026, supported by preference for durability and secure protection of personal and business items during frequent travel.

Travel accounts for a significant share of about 33% of applications in 2026, as leisure trips generate the largest block of demand for bags and suitcases. Retail sales growth across travel and lifestyle goods has continued, supported by a 3.1% year-on-year rise in total retail sales in March 2025, indicating solid underlying consumer engagement across the country.

How Tourism Demand Spreads From Gateway Cities to Small Towns in Japan

The Japan National Tourism Organisation publishes visitor arrivals data covering trends by country, purpose of visit, length of stay and travel spending, giving a detailed picture of who visits. Its December 2025 release records 3,617,700 arrivals in that month alone, taking the annual total to 42,683,600, up 15.8% from the previous year.

Policy and visa measures introduced after borders reopened helped stimulate global travel to Japan, and arrivals have grown across diverse source regions rather than a single origin. The government targets up to 60 million foreign tourists by 2030, with regional tourism investment expected to spread travel spending beyond core urban centres and stimulate travel-related purchases in smaller cities.

Minimalist Design and Sustainable Materials Reshape Buyer Preferences

A growing emphasis on minimalist lifestyles and sustainable consumption is reshaping demand for bags and luggage in Japan, as shoppers favour durable, lightweight products that last longer and travel easily. Materials such as high-density polyethene and carbon fibre combine functionality with longevity, while recycled plastics, organic textiles and biodegradable materials are gaining traction in premium and mid-range segments.

Producers are responding by reworking sourcing, packaging and design, including modular formats that extend product life and support circular economy principles across production, retail and logistics. Regulatory frameworks, environmental awareness and shifting consumer values reinforce sustainable purchasing habits, while public education on eco-conscious consumption embeds them further into everyday buying decisions across Japan.

Personalisation Opens New Doors for Smaller Independent Sellers

Customisation and personalisation offer a growing opportunity in Japan, as consumers seek products reflecting individual identity and distinct aesthetic preferences in fashion and accessories. Digital tools and mobile commerce have lowered barriers, allowing made-to-order features such as monogramming, colour choice and modular components that buyers can preview and tailor before purchase.

That shift particularly benefits new and smaller producers, which can differentiate without large upfront investment in physical retail networks or extensive store estates. E-commerce and on-demand manufacturing allow bespoke products to reach buyers efficiently, meeting expectations in a fashion-conscious country where buyers increasingly pay premiums for items aligned with personal style and practical needs.

Tariff Complexity Tests Suppliers Despite Strong Tourism Momentum

Tariff uncertainty and complex customs compliance remain a structural challenge for the Japan bags and luggage sector, raising costs for imported raw materials and components vital to manufacturing. Sudden shifts in tariff policies have increased cost volatility, forcing firms to absorb higher costs or adjust pricing, which compresses margins and limits flexibility for both domestic producers and foreign entrants.
