Clear Tarpaulins for Greenhouse Covering Solutions

Why Greenhouses Need Clear Covers

Tarpaulins can be used to help homeowners and business owners keep their greenhouse plants safe from damage caused by rain, wind and cold weather, while still letting in natural light. They provide an easy method of covering a frame without blocking sunlight that the plants need to grow.

Clear Tarpaulins are suitable for small garden greenhouses, plant shelters and larger growing areas where people are looking for light and weather protection in one cover.

They also help to keep leaves and pots off of the direct reach of harsh rains.

If it's the right size and fit, it can make it easier to care for plants daily.

Let More Natural Sunlight Inside

Sunlight is a crucial factor for plant growth. This creates a clear cover which means that seeds and flowers can still get light even if it's wet.

This makes it practical for the gardeners who don't want to put the young plants in a dark area.

However not all clear sheets will transmit the same amount of light.

Check the material prior to purchase, particularly if the greenhouse will be used for plants that require a good amount of sunlight.

Protect Plants From Bad Weather

Uncontrolled rain can cause fragile leaves to become damaged and strong wind can blow over pots and trays. A clear sheet provides a barrier between plants and changing outside conditions.

It can also help to prevent garden soil becoming waterlogged when it rains heavily.

Tarpaulins are an easy-to-use material to provide a cover for basic greenhouses, home gardens and certain commercial greenhouses.

Select a sheet appropriate to conditions and greenhouse structure.

Choose The Right Sheet Thickness

The thickness of a cover influences its durability for repeated use. A light sheet will work well for a small, seasonal shelter, and a heavier sheet will work better for a frame that will be outside for extended periods.

Consider exposure to strong winds, sharp branches or rough usage of the greenhouse.

Thicker cover can offer increased wear resistance, but may also be heavier.

Fit the sheet to the frame to ensure safe support of the structure.

Keep Greenhouse Frames Covered Securely

A well fitting cover is essential. Loosely hanging sheets can be blown up, torn at the edges and/or damaged around the points of attachment.

Determine the size of the frame before purchasing, and leave sufficient material to anchor each side.

To secure the sheet, use eyelets, clips or appropriate fasteners that do not rip the sheet.

Continue to monitor the sides periodically, paying particular attention after a windy night.

Prevent Water From Collecting Above

Likely to collect water in dips of an ill-fitting cover. The additional weight can cause stretching of the sheet, or load on the greenhouse structure.

A slight slope should be used on the cover to allow rain to flow off, and not pool.

And after a big rain, look at the roof.

A little observation could give you an idea of the areas in need of support before it becomes a larger issue.

Create Better Growing Space Outdoors

Covered greenhouses provide plants a more secure growing environment. One can be used in the home to raise seedlings, guard herbs or group potted plants together during cold and wet weather.

Clear covers can be placed over benches of plants or temporary growing sites in small businesses.

It doesn't have to be fancy.

Basic structure and a proper sheet can offer some protection for routine garden chores.

Support Small Plant Growing Businesses

Practical protection of stock is often required in garden centres, nurseries and in market gardens. Clear cover may provide protection for young plants and make it possible for customers or workers to view the contents.

It could also be appropriate in temporary working spaces for staff to sort pots or prepare seedlings.

However, it is not a clear sheet alone that can control all growing conditions.

Regular attention is still required for the ventilation, watering, shade and temperature.

Improve Airflow And Heat Control

Even if it is cool outside, greenhouse air can be kept hot by a clear cover on the greenhouse. Inadequate air circulation can cause plants to suffer or to wilt sooner than normal.

Don't close the space completely or install vents to release warm air.

Open up during warm weather and shut when weather protection is important.

Make frequent checks on plants; adjust as needed.

Reduce Moisture And Condensation

Clear cover can collect droplets of moisture from the inside when it is humid air. Excessive moisture can lead to mould or disease in plants, especially if the leaves remain damp for long periods.

This risk can be reduced by good ventilation.

Water plants close to the soil, not on the foliage; take out dead plant material from the greenhouse.

Regular small inspections will help maintain a tidier and healthier growing room.

Clean Clear Covers With Care

Outside of a greenhouse sheet may accumulate dust, mud and fallen leaves. This dirt will affect light penetration and obstruct the view of the plants.

Wash cover with water and soft cloth or sponge.

Don't use abrasive brushes or sharp objects that might scratch or puncture the material.

Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for care to extend the lifespan of the sheet.

Check For Wear And Small Tears

Even the best cover can be over-used. The material can be damaged by sunlight, the wind, or repeated motion and a loose branch can cause a small hole.

Regularly check the sheet, especially corners, eyelets and rubbing areas.

Repair small problems early, if possible in the material.

Maintain an old cover until it is in really bad shape, then change it out before the plants are exposed to the elements.

Find A Cover For Your Needs

Consider the size of the greenhouse, the kinds of plants it will hold and how long the cover will be outside before purchase. A simple sheet for small frame might be enough for a home gardener, but a large cover, with frequent use, might be necessary for a commercial grower.

Please read the size, material, fixing points and care instructions given.

Don't select based on the price.

A proper cover may be able to save time and prevent plant and equipment damage.
