Boiler Upgrade Scheme: Check If You Qualify for Support Now?

Replacing an ageing boiler with low-carbon heating can be a major expense. The UK Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) helps reduce the upfront cost of eligible heat pumps and biomass boilers, but support is not automatic: location, ownership, existing heating and chosen technology all matter.
This guide explains likely eligibility, grant rates and application steps. Rules can change, so confirm your circumstances with an MCS-certified installer and official guidance before agreeing to work.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The BUS is a government grant programme for property owners in England and Wales. It contributes towards replacing fossil-fuel heating, including oil, gas, electric-resistance and LPG systems. It is not paid to you as cash: the installer applies and deducts the grant from your bill.
It supports air-source, ground-source and water-source heat pumps, plus certain biomass boilers. A hybrid system that keeps a fossil-fuel boiler alongside a heat pump is not eligible.
How much support could you receive?
Current published grants are:
•£7,500 towards an air-to-water heat pump, a ground-source heat pump or an eligible water-source heat pump.
•£5,000 towards an eligible biomass boiler.
•£2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump in a residential property.
Until 31 March 2027, an eligible off-gas-grid property heated by oil or LPG, with no mains gas connection, may receive an extra £1,500 towards an air-source or ground-source heat pump: £9,000 total. This is not a general bonus; all standard rules still apply.
Only one grant can be claimed per property. These amounts are contributions, not promises of a free installation. Final costs vary with system design and property requirements, so request a written quote showing the grant deduction separately.
Who is likely to qualify?
You must own the property and replace a fossil-fuel heating system. Eligible owners may apply for a home, second home, business property or rental property; you do not have to live there yourself.
The scheme operates in England and Wales only. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different programmes; check their official guidance instead.
Property and technology checks
Most new builds are excluded, as are social housing and properties already given government or Energy Company Obligation funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler. Certain self-builds qualify if built or commissioned by the original owner and never owned by a business or organisation. A completed new-build with a fossil-fuel boiler may qualify, while one still under construction generally cannot.
Biomass has stricter conditions: the property must be off the gas grid, in a rural location, and the boiler must meet emissions requirements. Biomass grants are unavailable for self-builds. An installer can check the details.
The replacement must meet scheme standards and heat the property appropriately. BUS cannot fund replacement of an existing low-carbon system. Capacity and technology limits apply, so get a professional assessment before choosing equipment.
Do you need insulation first?
Earlier insulation funding does not itself disqualify you, and insulation is not a universal BUS precondition. A well-insulated home can help a heat pump run comfortably and economically. Review your Energy Performance Certificate and ask how heat loss, radiators, hot water and controls affect the design.
How to apply: a practical checklist
Your installer, not you, submits the application. Use this checklist:
1.Check the basics. Note your location, ownership, current fuel and any previous heating-system grants.
2.Get multiple quotes. Contact MCS-certified installers for surveys and comparable written prices. Check that both installer and equipment meet scheme rules.
3.Review the design. Ask about expected performance, radiator or pipework changes, hot water, warranties and maintenance.
4.Confirm the price. Ensure the quote separately lists the grant deduction and explains exclusions and what happens if the application is refused.
5.Let the installer apply. They submit to Ofgem. You will be contacted to confirm consent and eligibility; respond promptly or the application may be rejected.
6.Agree timing and keep records. Installation and commissioning deadlines apply. Keep the consent message, quote, invoice and system certification.
Do not treat a verbal promise as approval. Ask your installer to explain the application status and completion deadline.
Get a heat-pump quote with confidence
Ask each installer the same questions: Is my current system eligible? Do I qualify for the standard grant or temporary uplift? What is the total installed price after the grant? Which building improvements are needed? How will the system perform in cold weather, and who provides aftercare?
If you are searching for Get Heat Pump Grant Through Boiler Upgrade Scheme, start with an eligible MCS-certified installer, not a direct application form. Compare clear quotes to see the real cost; the installer manages the BUS claim. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant can make low-carbon heating more affordable, but sound design and a transparent contract matter as much as the headline figure.
Final check before you commit
Confirm eligibility before signing. Compare MCS-certified quotes, check the grant deduction and verify that your property and equipment meet current rules. Consult GOV.UK and Ofgem.
Frequently asked questions
Can tenants apply?
No. The applicant must own the property. A landlord who owns a qualifying rental property may apply, subject to all other criteria.
Can I receive the grant for a gas boiler replacement?
Potentially, if the gas boiler is being replaced by an eligible system and your property and installation meet the scheme rules. A heat pump added alongside a fossil-fuel boiler as a hybrid system is excluded.
Do I apply directly to Ofgem?
No. Your MCS-certified installer applies on your behalf. You will be asked to confirm your consent and eligibility.
Is the £9,000 grant available to everyone?
No. The additional £1,500 is time-limited through 31 March 2027 and applies to qualifying oil- or LPG-heated properties without a mains gas connection when installing an eligible air-source or ground-source heat pump.
Can I claim if I live in Scotland or Northern Ireland?
The BUS covers England and Wales. Check the appropriate national schemes for support elsewhere in the UK.
